Bangladesh ferry sinks, about 12 missing

A ferry sank in Bangladhesh after being struck by a sand barge and about a dozen people were missing, police said, after earlier reports as many as 50 were unaccounted for.

No bodies had been found.

A police official earlier told reporters the ferry, carrying passengers across the river, had been rammed at Narayanganj, 20 km (12 miles) from Dhaka.

Ferry sinkings are common on Bangladesh rivers, killing hundreds of people every year, as operators overload vessels and flout safety regulations despite government pledges to ensure enforcement.
